After staying about six weeks in the Amazon in and around Tarapoto, I'm now in Chachapoyas, which is technically still in the Amazon but at a much higher elevation (about 7000') with a cooler, drier climate. The night bus to get here broke down on a remote section of the highway, and for a while I thought we could be stranded for a very long time. I was amazed that with I think very limited tools and supplies the drivers managed to fix the problem after about two hours of work under the chassis of the bus.
